Physical refining
The physical refining of fats and oils is distillation and de-acidification, which is based on the significant difference in volatility between triglycerides and free fatty acids (under vacuum conditions).The principle of steam distillation under higher vacuum (residual pressure below 600 Pa) and higher temperature (240~260℃) can achieve the purpose of removing free fatty acids and other volatile substances in the oil.At the same time of distillation and de-acidification, it is also accompanied by a comprehensive effect of desolventizing (for extracted oil), deodorization, detoxification (organic chlorine in rice bran oil and some toxic substances such as cyclic hydrocarbons) and partial bleaching.
The physical refining of oils is suitable for processing high acid oils, such as rice bran oil and palm oil.
The physical refining process of fats and oils includes two parts, namely pretreatment of crude oil and distillation and de-acidification.
Pretreatment includes three processes of crude oil removal of impurities (referring to mechanical impurities, such as cake residue, sand and grass cuttings, etc.), degumming (including phospholipids and other adhesive substances, etc.), and bleaching. Through pretreatment, the crude oil becomes pretreated oil that meets the process conditions of distillation and de-acidification. This is the prerequisite for physical refining. If the pretreatment is not good, distillation and de-acidification will not be possible or qualified oil cannot be obtained.
Distillation and de-acidification mainly include oil heating, cooling, distillation, and fatty acid recovery.
The main equipment used in physical refining includes impurity removal machine, filter, degumming tank, bleaching tank, oil heat exchange tank, oil heating tank, distillation de-acidification tank, fatty acid condenser and vacuum device.
